Public Speaking
Yesterday morning was a pretty typical Sunday. We went to church and Sunday School. However, when we returned home we spent some time working on our presentation. We had to skip our usual Sunday Zoom because it would normally be starting about the time we had to leave.
We drove to an absolutely charming little country church:
Two of Walter’s former coworkers attend there, and had contrived to get us invited to present about our ministry. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. And there were some surprises. One member of the congregation was a former neighbor of ours whom we probably hadn’t seen in at least 20 years. The pastor’s wife was in the same homeschool group as me and remembered me from our co-op classes. And the lady in charge of the AWANA program had gone to college with our daughter Lina and attended a couple of our chai parties. Small world.
We sang a couple of songs and then it was time for our presentation. The tech guy was able to put our PowerPoint presentation on the big screens, but he didn’t have a remote for it so Walter just tugged on his ear every time he needed the slide changed. The guy was right on it every time.
It was a small group—maybe 25 people, including kids, but they seemed pretty engaged and interested, and we did get some questions at the end. Only two people signed up for our newsletter—both of whom we already knew. But one older gentleman handed Walter an envelope, and when we opened it later we found it contained $500 in cash. We don’t even know his name or how to thank him.
I guess we’ll find out at some point if the church decided to support us. Meanwhile, I hope they’ll pray for us.
This morning I overslept a little after waking up at 5:30 and having trouble going back to sleep. Good thing I didn’t have to rush off anywhere. I think I slept till 7:35!
Walter got back to work on more painting. He got at least one of the garage doors done today, but once again we are almost out of paint and will have to spring for one more gallon in order to finish the trim on the north side of the house.
My neighbor Kim came over to visit this morning and I knitted while she was here. She and Kevin are about to be empty-nesters as their daughter will be moving onto campus at the end of the week. I remember when she was born and it doesn’t seem that long ago!
I spent the afternoon writing and mailing notes and exercising and reading a book about travel. I’ve been fighting a headache for several hours and am ready for it to go away.
Joy Spark: Yesterday morning we finally received the report on Walter’s blood work from Friday. His PSA is down to 5.14! It was 350 in May and 75 a month ago. This is HUGE progress in a very short time! And also, we had another random rainshower yesterday. Today’s joy spark was seeing that we received a donation from a very old friend.
