Yesterday in church we got to see a slide show of the week experienced by the second team. Our team, the construction team, was the first team, and the second team was the VBS and dental team. It looks like their week went pretty well.
We had a fun Zoom with Flynn’s family in the afternoon, in which Paisley told us that her favorite thing about their vacation was “everything.”
And then, after supper, we drove over to Kilgore for the Texas Shakespeare Festival’s performance of Julius Caesar. The set was beautiful:
(This is after the shocking murder of Caesar in the Senate). But somewhat to my surprise, the characters all wore modern dress, and not the togas one might expect. This was part of my birthday gift from Robin. Much Ado About Nothing is still to come! I have to admit that I couldn’t help thinking of lines from Rinse the Blood off My Toga while watching the play.
In contrast, today has been a very discouraging day for me. I started one of my new meds a week ago, and the other one this morning. So I installed a new continuous glucose monitor yesterday, in hopes of seeing some improvement in my blood glucose levels. Instead, I was in tears by lunchtime. My fasting glucose was high, and just rose higher and higher, even when I’d ingested nothing but water. After taking my meds with a couple bites of beef, my blood sugar skyrocketed as if I’d feasted on donuts and orange juice. And it stayed high all day—a good ten to twenty points higher than I was averaging back in May, despite eating zero carbs. Zero. Carbs. So it’s definitely the meds that are doing this, but I thought I’d found alternatives that would not affect my blood sugar. And then, just to keep it interesting, when I got on my exercise bike this morning, I was overcome with dizziness after a few minutes. I have to assume the new med made my blood pressure go a little too low.
I am so, so discouraged. I have worked so hard, done so much research, put in so much effort, and it’s like my body plays by completely different rules than everybody else’s. I really thought I had it figured out, and I was so wrong. I don’t know where to go from here.
In other news, I had a little gift I wanted to send overseas. It is small and light and only weighs a couple of ounces. Yet when I went to the post office to mail it, I was told the cheapest option would cost me $47!!! I didn’t send it.
And of course, today was the day that former hurricane Beryl arrived. The rain was quite light this morning, but soon became very heavy. At 2:00 the tornado sirens went off, and I shut down my computer “just in case,” thus losing out on time to work on my curriculum.
By midafternoon we had some wind and very heavy rain. I was afraid my neighbor Kim wouldn’t be willing to walk through Beryl in order to come visit me, but she did! So I was able to tell her about our Belize trip while the rain continued to pour down.
At suppertime I braved the downpour to go empty the rain gauge before it overflowed. At that point we had received 7.25 inches of rain. When I checked again at about 10:00 p.m., the rain had slowed to an occasional drizzle and there was another 1.25 inches in the gauge, for a grand total of 8.5 inches. This means that since this morning, we have had more than triple the usual rainfall for the entire month of July. And the high temperature was only in the 70s! What a treat!
