A Valentine's Tornado Warning
Jasper didn’t go to work this morning because the forecast was for rain. As it turned out, the rain didn’t arrive until much later.
I was up at about my normal time, and got quite a bit of chopping done before I left to go to Walmart in hopes of finding some rotisserie chicken. I needed two chickens, and they had exactly two. Not only that, but my favorite cashier was working and available. When I told her I was making a Sri Lankan recipe, she was very skeptical. She’d never heard of Sri Lanka. However, she approved of the fact that I was doing it to please our Asian college girls.
I had most of the chopping done by lunchtime—including the chickens. That made it possible for me to catch up on my Bible reading in the afternoon, in addition to making a chocolate dessert and grating the carrots. By late afternoon, everything was ready:
However, the weather had taken a turn. It grew very dark outside, and then our phones informed us that there was a tornado warning in effect. This means an actual tornado had been spotted. The sirens went off. The rain and wind arrived quite suddenly, with the rain lashing the windows beside my computer chair. Fortunately, we didn’t have any damage and the wild weather soon settled to a steady rain.
Then it was time to pull the dessert out of the oven and put my very large pot on the stove to start cooking the kottu roti. I wanted to make something for the girls that would be special for Valentine’s Day, and I know Joanna especially really likes it. I did cheat a little by using tortillas instead of making roti from scratch:
The girls walked through the rain to get here and were delighted to have familiar food for supper. Afterward we watched some snippets of the Olympics with them for a while. They have not had a lot of exposure to winter sports, so they found it interesting. And they also loved the dessert.
I sent them home with leftovers of both the kottu roti and the dessert. And still had enough for at least two more meals for the guys.
Walter and I finished off the evening by watching a silly rom-com, during which I got some knitting done. Wall-to-wall excitement around here! And I still have a kitchen to clean up . . .
Joy Spark: Receiving a photo of a special baby girl reclining on the quilt I sent—the one that was mine as a baby and was made by my mother, both my grandmothers, and my great-grandmother. I hated to just take it to the thrift store, so I’m glad my friend can use it.
Parting Shot:
Our Valentine’s girls.
