A Task Completed
I failed to mention yesterday that one of the features of my day trip with Robin was that I was test-wearing my airplane shirt. Earlier this spring, I saved up and bought a T-shirt with multiple built-in pockets. Nine pockets, to be exact. I never carry a handbag on a plane, not even one of my beloved Sash bags. And I like the idea of not having a bag that might be a target for thieves when we’re doing our touristy activities in Zambia.
So, it was an interesting test. For the first couple of hours, I constantly felt that something was missing, because I’m so used to wearing my Sash all the time. But you know, everything I really needed was either in my shirt pockets or my pants pockets. In a practical sense, that shirt is exactly what it needs to be. What it isn’t is flattering. Most of the pockets are arranged across the abdominal area. So if you have a belly (which I do) and then you put stuff in the pockets (which I did), your belly will be even more prominent and also lumpy. I guess it’s a good thing I’m not trying to impress anyone!
This morning I managed to sleep until 7:00, so was up early enough to see Jasper off on his yard job. I did my weekly Walmart run right away before it got busy and before the temperature rose beyond my comfort level. I spent much of the morning doing paperwork and laundry, but I did manage to get one pillowcase sewn before noon.
In the afternoon I suddenly realized that I actually had quite a lot to do in the kitchen, so I spent some time making the curry marinade and chopping vegetables and cutting up meat and making a dessert and then my own dinner. I did find it a little amusing that tonight’s dinner was in celebration of my birthday, and that the dinner I made is one I can’t eat. I focused instead on what I thought the others would enjoy, and for Joanna, curry is a pretty sure bet.
Once I had the curry simmering on the stove and the rice cooking in the rice cooker, I had enough time to make the final pillowcase for Zambia.
These are for four young children. Do you think they’re bright enough? The butterfly ones are for girls, and the space-themed one for a boy. I hope they like them. That is the end of my Zambia sewing!
However, I still have some grandgirl sewing to do over the next couple of days.
Jasper was at the local comic-con this afternoon, but he made it home in time for supper, and Joanna also came. There was nothing “birthdayish” about the meal except that I don’t always go to the trouble of making curry, and today I also sauteed some shrimp to go with it, because that is something that I can eat. Joanna was also thrilled about the shrimp. Growing up in Sri Lanka, she was used to eating seafood every day before she came here.
Joanna didn’t have any other commitments this evening, so she stayed and watched a movie with us. She has seen so few movies that we can pick almost anything and be pretty sure it will be new to her.
After she left I still had a kitchen to clean up but I also managed to get another pillowcase made, which will be sent to a granddaughter once we get back from our trip. I could have finished the second one too if we hadn’t watched a movie.
Eight more days.
